How Foodly Works: Snap a Meal, Grow Your Pet

A walkthrough of Foodly — the food tracker that cares back. Log meals by photo, text, voice, or barcode, and watch a little companion grow with your habits.

Your Foodly pet waving hello

The food tracker that cares back.

You've probably tried a calorie counter before. Most people have - and most people quit within a couple of weeks. Endless menus, tiny numbers, and a quiet little voice telling you that you ate badly. Foodly is built the other way around.

You log a meal. A little companion reacts, grows, and cheers you on. That's the whole loop - and it's why people actually come back.

Here's how it works.

The core loop: snap → review → grow

Snap a photo of your meal

Tap the Log Food button in the center of the navigation bar and the Quick Log sheet opens - the single front door for everything you eat.

  1. Snap it. Point your camera at your plate and tap the shutter. In a few seconds the AI names each food, estimates the portion in grams, and returns calories plus protein, carbs, fat, fiber, sugar, and sodium. When there's a strong match, it pulls official numbers from the USDA food database.
  2. Review it. You land on a detail screen where you can scale the portion (25 / 50 / 75 / 100% or custom), edit any ingredient, rename the meal, set breakfast / lunch / dinner / snack, or change the time. Nothing is saved until you say so.
  3. Grow. Save the meal and your pet reacts - it fills up, its mood lifts, and over time it evolves. That's the reward. No shame, no math to lead with. Just a companion that's glad you showed up.

Takeout night counts. There's no kale requirement.

Five ways to log - pick whatever's fastest

Quick Log is search-first: start typing a food, or choose a method.

Method What it does Best for
Snap (photo) AI identifies foods and portions from a picture Home meals, restaurants, new foods
Describe (text or voice) Say or type "two eggs and toast" for a full breakdown Quick logs, hands busy
Scan (barcode) Looks up a packaged product instantly Packaged foods, drinks, snacks
Label (nutrition facts) AI reads a printed label — in many languages Packaged foods with no barcode match
Quick Add (manual) Type calories and macros yourself, no AI Shakes, supplements, known values

Saved a meal you eat often? Keep it as a Favorite and re-log it in one tap. Recent meals show up too, so a repeat lunch is a single tap away.

Manual Quick Add, barcode scans, and re-logging favorites are always free and never count against your daily AI analyses.

Your pet grows with your habits

This is the part no other tracker has. Your companion moves through five stages as you keep logging — and it has real moods, a fullness meter that rises when you eat and gently drifts down over time, and a daily report card in its own voice.

You earn growth points for the small stuff that builds a habit: caring for your pet, nourishing it with balanced meals, and eating varied foods. Consistency is what evolves it — not perfection. You name your pet in the first minute, and from there it's yours.

It quietly keeps score — the kind that helps

Your pet's daily tip

Every meal gets a 0–100 nutrition score (Poor → Excellent) with plain-language awards ("high protein," "good fiber," "watch sodium"), a couple of improve this meal tips, and a keep doing note. Your whole day rolls up into a daily score too.

Your dashboard shows calories consumed vs. a target that's calculated from your own profile and goal, plus a clean macro breakdown. A color-coded calendar turns your history into a glance: on target, under, or over, day by day.

More than a food log

Foodly rounds out the everyday habit with a few things worth having in one place:

  • Body Hub — track weight and water for free, and (with Pro) blood pressure, body fat, muscle mass, and body circumferences. Smart trend smoothing filters out day-to-day noise so you see real progress, and weight predictions estimate how many weeks to your goal. Reach your weight goal with a friend in your pocket.
  • Intermittent fasting — a timer right on your dashboard (14:10, 16:8, 18:6, or 20:4) with a live ring and metabolic stages: Fed → Fat burn → Ketosis → Deep burn.
  • AI Nutrition Coach — an in-app chat that actually knows your day. Ask "How am I doing?" or "What should I eat?" and it answers using today's calories, macros, meals, and goal. It's a coach, not a doctor — and never the pet.
  • Friends & Duels — add friends, compare progress on a friendly leaderboard, and challenge someone to a 1v1 Duel over 3–7 days on growth, nutrition score, or meals logged.
  • Achievements & celebrations — badges unlock automatically across food, streaks, pet, water, weight, favorites, and fasting. And when you hit a real moment — a streak milestone, a perfect week, your goal weight — Foodly celebrates it with you.
